I have been set FREE by Google and Gmail! So Can You!
Everyday real estate agents ask me questions like:
- What is the best phone for Realtors to use?
- What is the best contact mgmt system?
- What is the best email to use?
So I thought I would share a quick story with you …
For the past year I have been anxiously waiting to get my iPhone; and of course transition to all MAC computers. (but that is for another time.)
Last week my cell phone just stopped working the way it should, programs were freezing and the real problem was that my phone was no longer sending emails ![]()
Rather than call Sprint for tech support I just assumed this was my chance to make the switch to the iPhone so I headed out to the store to pick one up.
On my way to the store I found myself with an internal struggle going on in my mind, I kept replaying all of the conversations with iPhone owners telling me how badly their ATT coverage sucked.
Then I looked at the ATT cell phone rates and compared to what I currently have with Sprint and I just couldn't justify doubling my cell bill for the same benefits.
What to do to fix the delema?
I decided to take a look at the Google phones and immediately fell in love!
But when I got home and excitedly began setting up my phone I couldn't get my email to send with this phone either …. so I called Sprint and still don't believe what they told me.
"Sprint no longer allows outgoing SMTP"!
What does this mean?
Sprint wants you to use your own domain servers to send email, but my experience is that most domains don't work when trying to send over the cell carriers network!
So I turned to Google and realized they have made it super easy to add your POP3 domain to your gmail which allows you to use gmail for your email client while sending/receiving email from your personal domain.
So I figured what the heck … I imported my real estate and personal contacts from Outlook into Gmail and to my surprise Google automatically syncs my contacts, tasks, calendar, etc… to my phone without every having to "officially sync my phone & pc with a cable".
The only thing I don't like about this solution is that Gmail doesn't seem to allow you to use html in your emails
So no more pasting screen shots or using links to my Social Media / Blog sites in my email signature file. Can this be? Do you know anything different?
Are any other Realtors using Gmail like this?
If so what are your thoughts and/or experiences?

I've had a droid for 2 months now and it is a great phone for business, Microsoft just had their cheese moved in a big way, The phone, the Apps, The Simplicity of use and wireless sync every 120 minutes to various accounts. I really like this phone.
I'm an iPhone user that came over from Verizon a year or so ago. I also use a Microsoft Exchange Server service at $14.95/month to sync my Outlook calendar and contracts. So far so good. No wires and access via my desktop, iPhone or Internet enabled computer.
Truth be told, I am starting to get positive buzz from some lenders and other Realtors about the wonderfulness of Google both with Gmail and Google Voice. I have a Gmail account (haven't imported contracts, yet). I'm one of those folks that just want to stick my toe in the water before I go swimming.
Hi Ken…. I am the type of person who likes to just jump in
But as much as I like Google, this HTC phone processor is just to slow for me… thinking I may have to switch to the iPhone.
easy to synch iphone to outlook contacts, calendar, emails and outlook to gmail emails. Just take a look in the synch setup on itunes. Only problem is if you try to synch to more than computer. But there is software out there that will do even that.

Drew, I also have Sprint, and I've been holding out for an iPhone as well. But like you, can't see doubling my bill for less than superior coverage. I've kept my blackberry curve b/c it's still an amazing phone even though I really want touch screen (was a Treo user for 5+ years). My wife got the Google HTC Pro and she is liking it. I just installed Google Voice on it, so she can get her voice mails sent as text message as well (even though it's not very accurate…a few weeks ago an agent wanted to show one of my listings on "Fox Ridge Circle" and Google Voice translated to "Farts Ridge Circle"…I was ROFL!!!). She didn't like the contact sync b/c she had lots of old contacts on her gmail account that she didn't want on her phone. I'm sure if Verizon ever gets the iPhone OR att reduces their monthly fees to compete with other carriers I'll switch in a heart beat.
Tony .. LOL about the voice translation. After a few weeks of using this HTC Hero I am a bit frustrated at how slow the processor is
If Apple would have released the iPhone to all carriers everyone would be using iPhone.
hey drew
you may have seen this already, but check out http://5thirtyone.com/archives/821 for html signatures in gmail.
