Should you schedule with Tweet Later or Automate with Google Alerts?

There is a time and place for everything!

The best online strategy is balanced to provide current, up-to-date relevant content.

Social Networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are far too important to expect that you can achieve success with only one strategy.

The most common objection heard from those resisting the fact that social networking and blogging are here to stay is, "I don't have the time!"

Because of this silly objection, I see many Realtors latching onto what I call the "scheduling strategy".

What is the schedule strategy you ask?

The scheduling strategy is where you write a bunch of content one day to be published over a period of time.  For example, you may sit down today to write 3 blog posts to be published on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of next week.

This is a smart example of scheduling, especially if you are going to be on vacation next week.

The not so smart example is where you schedule all of your online content more than 1 week in advance.

How NOT to be relevant online!

Choosing to employ an out of balance strategy online isn't smart.  However, being out of balance is really bad when you have chosen the "scheduling strategy" as your primary method of building your brand equity.   The best example I can give you is to share a quick story from Facebook …

… recently I was reading a friends Facebook wall and noticed that one of his facebook friends commented on a recent update, her comment read: "didn't you just post this question a couple days ago?"

You see this person has elected to do what I fear so many others are doing, he writes all of his facebook updates and tweets at the beginning of each month and then doesn't log back on until its time to write next months content.

This is not smart!

Social Networking is all about the "interaction and engaging others", it isn't a platform to blast your advertising or generic content.

Tools like Tweet Later were created to help you not hurt you, but you have to understand how and when to use these tools.  Pre-written tweets, blog posts, etc… are nothing more than drip campaigns and you should know that most people ignore drip campaigns.

Furthermore how can you expect that what you write today will be relevant in thirty days?  Come on! Let me tell you, it won't be!

Unless we are doing research, we want current up-to-the-minute news online.

Automation is the better option if you want to put forth minimal hands on effort.  Google Alerts is super simple and when used with Twitter Feed you can populate your Twitter and Facebook with keyword rich "current / relevant" content.

The major difference between scheduling and automating is:

Automation allows you to setup your keyword alerts one time and it will run forever (or until you stop it).  This is true automation!

I recommend that you consider a balanced approach to your online strategy that includes: scheduling, automating and of course hands-on publishing.

Most of your hands-on time should be invested in listening to and engaging others, or you miss the point of social media altogether.

What actions are getting you the best results with your online strategy?
