Newspaper reporters will call you!

When you have a decent web presence and seem to know what you are talking about …

… newspaper reporters will actually call you to discuss real estate related stories they are working on and to ask for quotes.

NewsJust recently I have talked to a number of reporters who are looking for anecdotal evidence to support what ever housing market story they are working on.

Just soooos you know, some reporters just what to spin their own story (no, say it isn't true).

These lovely reporters will quote you AND sometimes give you a plug while they are at it. Some recent examples right here: The Voice of San Diego – a new breed of online newspaper – award winning too. The San Diego Business Journal – I get regular calls from this very nice lady. Both with the reporters recognition of the source of the quote too! The moral of this story is:

  • Know you market
  • Keep up with statistics and trends
  • Post your blog stories regularly
  • Make them interesting and informative

Best advice about talking real estate statistics

If you don't know the answer to a question they ask – for instance the price of a home listed, number of active homes in the MLS, please don't make it up or flounder and sound like an idiot on the other end of the phone.

Honesty is the best answer, be upfront, say you don't have the info to hand and offer to do the research and call that person right back. There are other ways of attracting the attention of the press – suggest you also review floridarealtors.org.

This piece on Realty Times was written before blogging was invented (almost) but it's still relevant.

Our final piece of advice is to start blogging and start getting noticed! (Because it's not just reporters doing research – your next client is, right now)
